How to Install a Computer in a Car

  • Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery using a ratchet and socket.

  • Locate the computer. It will be in a metal case approximately 10-by-6 inches and have a large wiring harness or two that goes in one side and back out of the other side. The computer is behind the glove box in most cars but is also located under the hood and sometimes even behind the dashboard on the driver side.

  • Remove the harnesses plugged into the computer by pressing the lock button on the harness and pulling it out.

  • Remove the computer. There are a few ways to do this depending on the vehicle. Most computers are held in by four bolts, one in each corner. Others are held by a single strap with a bolt securing the strap.

  • Pull the computer out of the vehicle.

  • Put the new computer in place and attach it to the vehicle using either the strap or the bolts.

  • Reconnect the harnesses by simply plugging them in until they snap into place.

  • Follow the relearn procedure that was included with the computer. Each car has its own relearn procedure; some do not have one. Reattach the negative battery terminal.

  • Test drive the vehicle to make certain it is driving properly. Pay special attention to the idle speed and the shifting of the transmission
